At The Cafe...

Dearest Fifi,

Last night we waited for you at the aux tours de notre dame...

and you never showed! There was rumors that you were having a randevú with Romain Duris and if so we forgive you!

Let me tell you what you missed out on so you can be très jaloux....The food was très magnifique! We shared beef_bourguignon ...

pommes frites...
quiche....
Seared Foie Gras with Spiced Pears....
but we passed on the escargots....
After that you would think we could eat no more, but seeing the belles pâtisseries.... we couldn't resist the temptation of crepes.....
and creme brulee...
and how could we not partake of a bottle of Veuve Clicquot... and toast to you....
We waited until dark for you, but the lights of Paris called to us and I snapped this parting shot to remember our evening of celebration.... You were missed ami doux!

xoxo,
rue

Dearest Rue...
You are sooooo right... I was having a rendezvous with Romain Duris sitting outside in another cafe not far from you...
however it is not what you think... and it is quite top secret... Fifi is working on a SCREENPLAY for a romantic comedy... I am interested in using a foreign actor... not sure if I want a Frenchman or an Englishman like Orlando Bloom...

Now everyone knows why they have been seeing moi VIRTUALLY at many cafes around Paris with such beautiful men... oooh it has been quite a job!
Ooooh it does look like I missed out on a divine meal and ooooh my favorite champagne! I do sooooooooooo LOVE all the cafes around France... I recently painted a few more of them (available in my ETSY SHOP)... I now have a collection of Frameable Notecards ready for sale in My Etsy Store...
BUT FIRST... how about a GIVEAWAY... leave a comment (and be sure to leave your email address if you don't have a blog) and you could WIN a set of my NEW French Cafe Collection of Frameable Notecards! Deadline Sunday @ noon PDT... 3 Winners announced on Monday, April 27 post!

Come Flea with Shorehouse Chic!

Bonjour mes amies! It’s Laura from Shorehouse chic. Fifi has generously invited me to take you shopping at the famous Marché aux Puces St-Ouen de Clignancourt. And anyone who knows me knows I’m game for a flea market trip!

Paris was the first “big girl” trip I took by myself (with a friend joining me for the weekend, then leaving me solo week for the week). Of course, I wanted to go to the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame…but I really, really wanted to go to the flea markets! I was living without roommates for the first time and my dream was to scour Paris for trinkets and antiquities for my Pad du Bachelorette. All on a very wee tiny budget.

I was particularly hooked - nay; obsessed - with finding a set of French kitchen canisters, and more obsessed with finding them at the grand Clignancourt. You know…the, café, poivre, etc….so my (itty bitty) kitchen would look tres chic. “My, what cute canisters,” visitors would say. “Oh those little things? I picked them up in Paris.” Then I’d sort of dismiss it with a bat of my eyelids, a la Audrey Hepburn.

Painting: The marché aux puces, Porte de Clignancourt, by Luigi Loir.
Armed only with visions of canisters, some expendable francs (ahh…francs. Those were the days!) to seal the deal, and some tres horrible French, I hailed a taxi on my second day in Paris. In my best possible French I asked to please take me to the really big flea market.

In (miffed) English, the driver: “Lady, there are many flea markets in Paris.”

“And there are many taxis. Shall I find another or are we going to St-Ouen?”

Touché. Score one for American Girl in Paris. My fabulous friend Jean Martha over at Renovation Therapy just returned from Paris and has graciously offered to join our tour. Merci, mon ami Jean Martha!

No matter what part of the world you are in, flea markets can be overwhelming and this one is NO exception. At last estimate there were close to 3,000 vendors jammed on streets, in alleys, under tents and in storefronts offering everything from tube socks to Louis XVI antiques. I would recommend getting in the center of things where the organized tents and table are lined up, but some of the quaint shops lining the alleys have the best (re: pricy!) eye candy…

How do I love this Bordeaux rack? Let me count the ways…

Photo: Renovation Therapy.
These linens are affordable, but no vendor in sight! That’s another thing you’ll need to keep in mind…you may find what you want, but no one to actually sell it to you. :-)

Photo: Renovation Therapy.
Jean Martha has mentioned that the prices are not what they used to be…le sigh…making things as simple and beautiful as this lace out of our price range these days…

“Back in the day” look at the fabulous chandelier Jean Martha landed – pre-Euro, and pre-devalued dollar – for $125 US!

She cleaned it up extensively, but my oh my was it worth it.

And what about me? You must be wondering by now whatever happened to me in my canister quest! Well, “back in the day” I scored these fabulous beauties that have moved with me from apartment to apartment, and now to the shorehouse:

Naturally, within two weeks of first moving in with Mr. Shorehouse, he accidentally sent “the” flying across the kitchen. The glue wasn’t the only thing that was “crazy” after that episode. She fixed up OK, all things considered.

Thank you for joining us at le grand flea! Phew…I’m exhausted. Let’s stop for a crepe before we leave Clignancourt, shall we? _________________________________________________________
Ooooh YUMMY... I'm sorry I missed out on those crepes... I was outdoors painting Paris... I can never get enough of painting Paris! I even painted your cannisters outside on a friend's balcony...

and these lovely flowers outside The Paris Apartment...
and these too...
Ooooh what a glorious EARTH DAY outdoors with Laura of Shorehouse Chic and thanks to her blogging for moi... I can VIRTUALLY roam around Paris with a paint brush... MERCI BEAUCOUP LAURA!!!
Paintings in this post are AVAILABLE... and to see more paintings visit My Paintings du Jour and My Etsy Shop!
Tomorrow Rue of Rue's Peanut Butter and Jelly Life invites me to a cafe with her!
BUT... for NOW... don't forget to visit other OUTDOOR WEDNESDAY PARTICIPANTS... and HAPPY EARTH DAY!

10 Days in Paris...

Today I turn my blog over to Albarosa of Brillante Home Decor...

"Merci Fifi for the wonderful opportunity of writing about Paris in your enchanting Blog"
Albarosa

It was 8:00 AM of a cold December day when Linda and I arrived by train from Milan Stazione Centrale to Paris Gare de Lyon. We could barely sleep that night, rolling and tossing and turning...we thought it would be fascinating like taking the "Orient Express" but even if we paid for a first class Wagon Lit we spent the first hour laughing hysterically figuring out how to move around our luggage, not to mention undress or wash our face in that cubicle! Linda, more athletic, offered to sleep on the upper berth...I tried to read a book to avoid feeling claustrophobic.

Of course we fell asleep an hour before arrival so we had to rush to get ready.

The sleepless night was worth it, I always find it fascinating to arrive in the morning and right in the center of a city. The light was just starting to come out from the clouds. After a short ride by cab the first thing we did was to have a "café au lait" and a "pain au chocolat" while we were waiting for a guy with the keys of the apartment we had rented for 10 days.

The area was Le Marais, the most exciting, friendly and beautiful part of Paris. The apartment belonged to an internationally known photographer with whom I took a workshop in the past, Peter Turnley (the lucky and very talented guy lives between Paris and New York when not in Afghanistan, Brazil, Africa, around the world).

We had to drag our luggage up the last flight of stairs since the lift was stopping at the 4th floor (a 17th century building) and there we were in this Parisian bachelor pad with a balcony and the view of Parisian roofs and Parisian clouds and Parisian dawns and sunsets ( I assure you they are different).
and it was really charming and "très Français" (Linda kept looking for the washer, dryer, dishwasher, to no avail).

During the day we wandered everywhere, from the Musée Carnavalet, worth a visit to know Paris' history

to the Beaubourg for contemporary Art and for the extraordinary view from the restaurant.
to les Jardins du Palais Royal for a stroll and to admire the elegant stores under the arcade.
to Clignancourt for the Flea Market (Marché aux Puces) for interesting objects and people

We went to the most beautiful stores (furniture and fashion) , department stores, one day I even dragged Linda to a Christie's auction preview.

If we did not plan to go out for dinner or for crêpes we were going home with baguettes, Reblochon, Brie, Pâté de Foie Gras, tartes salée, cooked shellfish and of course lots of pastries and gateaux ("Cannelés"were my favourite sweet treats those days, baked in copper molds, caramelized on top to protect a perfectly moist - chewy heart) ....and fabulous bottles of wine, ça va sans dire!

On a windy night we went on a Bateaux Mouches' cruise and we silently absorbed the nocturnal beauty of Paris, drinking hot chocolate.

Of course we had to go for dinner at "Le Grand Colbert" feeling part of the movie "Something's gotta give" and we were actually seating in the same spot as Dianne (but Jack and Keanu did not show up...)
Another night at 1:00 AM (yes one in the morning) coming out of a restaurant we saw three Camargue horses standing near the wall...at first I thought...too much wine! but then we realized they were for real, so we ran home (luckily around the corner) and got our cameras.
We then spent an hour just looking at the people's faces coming along the street and suddenly seeing those beautiful animals, I took several pictures and finally what I call "a zinger" a perfect moment captured with the best exposure...click...a picture which looks staged but was instead totally natural and I still wonder if the two lovers ever saw the horses.

It was already 2 in the morning but people were walking by, still enjoying the night and it was December! What a city!

Paris is so magic and changes constantly but always remains the same! when you go there after a few or even many years she embraces you with her charm and her timeless beauty just like French women, beautiful no matter what their age is, real women with grace, esprit, and always sexy even with wrinkles and gray hair. The way they talk, their gestures, the smile, the twinkle in their eyes.

Think about the most famous actresses: Catherine Deneuve, Fanny Ardant, Isabelle Huppert, Isabelle Adjani, Ludivine Sagnier, Emmanuelle Beart , my favourite Juliette Binoche and many others, they are just like that and they always have great roles to play (like in the past Jeanne Moreau, Danielle Darrieux, Simone Signoret) and even the new generation of actresses like Audrey Tautou, Marion Cotillard, the extraordinary Cecile De France exude personality and charme.

Style, elegance, timeless beauty, respect for the past and looking forward to the future, this is Paris...charmant.

Ciao,
A.
